Criminal defense attorney Steven Halpert was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. He graduated from the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. After college, Mr. Halpert owned and operated three successful restaurants in Washington, D.C. for ten years. Acting on a life-long dream, he entered law school at South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas, where he earned scholastic achievement awards.

Mr. Halpert then transferred to the University of Baltimore School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland, where he graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors. During law school, Mr. Halpert interned for Baltimore City District Court Judge Kathleen O’Ferrall Friedman and Judge Howard S. Chasanow of the Court of Appeals, Maryland’s highest court. He also enjoyed a high-profile clerkship with the Maryland State Prosecutor’s Office and was an integral team member of the Linda Tripp-Monica Lewinsky wiretap criminal investigation and prosecution.

After successfully passing the Maryland Bar Examination, Mr. Halpert returned to Houston where he successfully passed the Texas Bar Examination. Currently, Steven Halpert is licensed in Maryland and Texas, and is admitted to practice law before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Mr. Halpert began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney (ADA) for Harris County, Texas in 2000. As an ADA, he prosecuted hundreds of cases ranging from serious felonies to simple misdemeanors. As a skilled and successful trial attorney, Mr. Halpert gained the respect of judges, jurors, defense attorneys, and fellow prosecutors. Mr. Halpert served as Chief of Misdemeanor Court as well as Felony prosecutor in both the adult and juvenile divisions. Mr. Halpert also served in the Family Criminal Law Division, a unit specifically created to prosecute domestic violence cases, and the Grand Jury Division, where he was responsible for personally presenting felony cases for indictment to numerous Harris County grand juries.

In 2003 Steven Halpert proudly began defending the citizen accused, and has dedicated his entire practice to criminal defense. He has represented citizens accused of Aggravated Sexual Assault, Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Arson, Intoxication Manslaughter, Possession of Child Pornography, Burglary of a Habitation, Theft, Possession of Controlled Substances, Driving While Intoxicated, and probation violations.

He has erased, or expunged, negative criminal history information from state and federal criminal history databases for hundreds of his clients. Mr. Halpert devotes a significant portion of his practice representing indigent Juveniles accused of crimes ranging from Theft to Aggravated Sexual Assault, and has been a requested speaker at seminars for juveniles and their families concerning the juvenile justice system. Mr. Halpert is a frequent guest lecturer for the South Texas College of Law Voir Dire (jury selection) class each semester.

Criminal defense attorney Steven Halpert can be heard every Sunday on KNTH radio as co-host of Sports and the Law. Mr. Halpert has developed a reputation as a tireless defender of citizens’ constitutional rights and the presumption of innocence.
